BiographySwedish subject born in Stockholm. Fought with the French Army during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. 1872 emigrated to Canada and worked as a topographical engraver. The next year he moved to Boston where he worked for the Prang lithographic company. Shortly after immigrating to the Unitied States in 1873, he attended the newly organized Art Students League in New York. His first illustrations were made for the old Daily Graphic of New York; later he became a staff artist for Frank Leslie's periodicals. During the Spanish-American war he was a special artist for Harper's Weekly and Colliers. Very prolific, he illustrated feature articles, special events, stories, and books inclduing Kirk Munroe's Flamingo Feather (1887) and Arthur Conan Doyle's The Refugees (1893). By 1881 he was a regular contributor to Harper's Magazine, then to Century, Scribner's, Cosmopolitan, and othe rleading newspapers. His work is forthright and without frills, whether rendered in pen and ink, black-and-white wash, or in full culor. His careful observances of fact and a strong compositional sense gave him the versatility to depict any subject convincingly, but he was especially competent with horses and military subjects.Person TypeIndividual
