Worthington Whittredge began his painting career creating works that took inspiration from the Hudson River School’s emphasis on the poetic moods of nature. Whittredge created some of his most dramatic views based on sketches made on the spot during trips into the field with other artists of this movement, such as Albert Bierstadt, John Frederick Kensett, and Sanford Robinson Gifford. He was also fascinated by the tonal moods of modern French landscape painting. Those works inspired him to explore European ideas about color in paintings he made along the coast of New England, including the Narragansett Bay.
