In May 1934, Peter Hurd purchased a forty-acre tract of land near the village of San Patricio, New Mexico, fifty miles west of Roswell. He named the property Sentinel Ranch in honor of El Sentinel Peak, which lies to the south and is the subject of this tempera. The landscape of Sentinel Ranch, the Hurd’s home in New Mexico, was a frequent subject for him, in all media.
