In addition to painting landscapes and portraits, Peter Hurd was drawn to portraying the local cultural scene, here capturing a quiet, desolate bar and hotel. Beginning in the 1950s, Hurd’s approach to tempera changed and he experimented with thinner, looser washes influenced by his work in watercolor. In this rainy night scene, he renders the transient effects of light and color with an Impressionistic luminosity.
