Christian Schussele
"Although primarily known as a teacher responsible for the educational development of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Christian Schussele was also a painter of portraits and history and genre paintings. He served as a professor of drawing and painting at the Academy, emphasizing the figure, from 1868 until 1879, when he died. Thomas Eakins, a former student of Schussele, who named him his assistant in 1876, assumed Schussele's position upon his death.
Schussele was born in 1824 (some sources say 1826) in Alsace Lorraine. Before arriving in Philadelphia in 1848, he had been educated in art in Strasbourg and Paris. "
