Sir Bernard Partridge
Sir (John) Bernard Partridge (1861-1945), Cartoonist and illustrator
"Best known for his illustrations for Punch magazine, Partridge previously worked as an actor under the pseudonym Bernard Gould before entering the world of political caricature in 1891. His social circle included many theatrical greats of the 19th century, including Sir Henry Irving, Dame Ellen Terry and Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson. Partridge's early artistic output in the 1880s-1890s reflected his personal interests, and mainly consisted of society caricatures and illustrated reviews of plays. In 1901 he replaced John Tenniel as Punch's chief cartoonist, a post he held until his death. He was knighted by Stanley Baldwin in 1925, and the following year he loyally supported the government during the General Strike."
