In his portrait of Joy Drew-Bear Valentine, George Weymouth takes care to depict her in a position of great power. Valentine—a friend and benefactor of the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art—engages the viewer directly with her piercing gaze. The low horizon line and limited palette of the background emphasize the outsized presence of the sitter. Though her horse is only barely visible, Weymouth refers to Valentine’s equestrian passion by portraying her in full riding habit. An avid horsewoman, she was a breeder and trainer of racehorses, a fox hunter and side-saddle enthusiast.
