This is one of twenty-six illustrations Parrish painted for the book version of The Knave of Hearts, Louise Saunders' play for children. Reflecting Parrish's interest in symmetrical composition and rich ornamentation, the arrangement features alternating convex and concave shapes accented by nearly identical figures. The glowing landscapes suggest the fairy-tale world the reader is about to enter.
