American Impressionist painters often gathered in art colonies across the country, such as the New Hope colony centered in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Edward Willis Redfield, co-founder of the colony, used it as a winter base, producing many snowy views of the Delaware River Valley. Under the flat blue sky of Winter Reflections, the frozen waterway is made up of multicolored loose brushstrokes. The brilliant sunlight glinting off the snow is a true challenge for artists like Redfield, who tried to capture the momentary effect of light.
