When the market for still-life painting cooled, Wilmington artist Jefferson David Chalfant turned to other subject matter, including genre scenes, which are scenes of everyday life. He often focused on individuals at work in his paintings, including musicians, clockmakers, or blacksmiths totally absorbed in their tasks, as with Study for The Hornblower. He used the same models posed in his prop-filled studio many times for different paintings of similar content. In addition to the model, many of the same or similar props strewn about the room can be found in his painting The Envious Critics hanging nearby.
