Curatorial RemarksThis painting could be the one Wyeth mentioned in a letter to his mother of August 10, 1909, "a picture for a shot-gun calendar." (Wyeth Family Archives). The artist did several images for the Ballistite and Empire Powder Company before it was absorbed by DuPont in 1910 (see letter NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "Friday-- / Dear Mama: / I've got but ten minutes...," dated in another hand May 14, 1910, "...Just lost the sale of a picture because the Dupont Co. absorbed my customer (the Ballastite (sic) Powder Co.", Wyeth Family Archives).
The availability of the calendar, for 25 cents, was noted in Field and Stream Magazine (Vol 14, p. 878). "The scene depicted is one that will appeal to all sportsmen, and the details are well brought out by the artist." Wyeth's name is not mentioned.
It is likely that this painting was first owned by J. H. Lau & Company, a sporting goods store on Chambers Street in New York. Lau & Co. sold all sorts of sporting goods, and imported firearms and ammunition. The company declared bankruptcy in 1916, and among the items listed in the bankruptcy sale were "oil paintings."
The image is directly related to a cover illustration for the December 1910 issue of Popular Magazine (NCW 1158); both paintings show similar figures and dogs. The artist later reworked the motif again for "The Three Hunters," an image for the 1933 Hercules calendar (NCW1154).
