Curatorial RemarksAlthough the pose is identical to the figure in the final work (NCW 279), the facial features of the figure in the drawing are not those of Jefferson. Wyeth often worked from family, friends or professional models, and then would add historically accurate faces. This practice was documented by Andrew Wyeth in "An American Vision Three Generations of Wyeth Art" (Brandywine River Museum, 19 ).
The drawing was originally adhered into a scrapbook titled "Drawings & Sketches of N. C. Wyeth, NA," ordered by Andrew Wyeth and constructed for him by G. Alan Chidsey of Great Neck, NY. Wyeth presented the scrapbook to his mother at Christmas, 1946, but during the mid to late 1970s many of the drawings were removed and sold or given away.
