Curatorial RemarksThis sign was painted for Christian C. Sanderson and his mother, who in 1906 rented the east section of the house used by George Washington during the Battle of Brandywine (depicted in NCW 1717). Sanderson, a local historian and schoolmaster, and his mother were friends of the entire Wyeth family. Though the Sandersons allowed the public to visit the historic house at almost anytime, they were forced to move in 1922 when Sanderson most likely took the sign with him. The house burned in 1931.
