Curatorial RemarksThe Brandywine River Museum of Art holds Scribner's unillustrated 1925 edition of Drums which the artist read in preparation for this commission, marking it with notes throughout and on the endsheets (NCWS.95.239). Pentimenti reveal that lettering across the top (DRUMS) and across the bottom (JAMES BOYD / PICTURES by N. C. WYETH) was painted out, most likely by the artist himself.
An example of the illustration, pasted to a slipcase or holiday box, is owned by a private collector.
