Curatorial RemarksThis image corresponds closely to two photographs of Henriette Wyeth at age 3 playing near the chicken coop on the property in Chadds Ford that the Wyeths rented between 1908 and 1911(filed after NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "Dear Mama, After a long delay I am at last..." and dated April 14, 1910 in another hand). While the tree in the foreground of the painting does not occur in the photographs its shadow is an integral design element in the photographs and attests to the presence of the tree.
