Curatorial RemarksAccording to Wyeth's income tax notes for 1939 (Brandywine River Museum Library), expenses for this painting included research trips to Wilmington, Philadelphia and Harrisburg. The trip to Harrisburg was probably to visit H. C. Frey, one of the collaborative authors of "Conestoga, Six-Horse Bell Teams, 1750-1850" privately published by John Omwake in 1930. A copy of this book, inscribed "N. C. Wyeth" was found in John McCoy's studio (BRM library # 36142.423).
The Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.161) of the composition drawing used in the transfer of the image from paper to panel; the composition drawing itself (NCW 2457) is privately owned. The museum holds a color proof (NCWS.95.6549) of the image that from evidence of adhesive spots on the reverse probably was mounted like NCWS.95.6554 or NCWS.95.6562, bearing a stamp by Niagara Litho. Co.
