Curatorial RemarksNo archival material has been found that precisely dates this painting, and it is likely that Wyeth was working on it during the closing months of 1930 or the beginning of 1931. The first printing was in April, 1931; reprintings during N. C. Wyeth's lifetime occurred every year thereafter except in 1932 and 1944. On later reprints, the dust-jacket illustration was a detail from the painting showing just the bow of the ship with figurehead and lines.
