Curatorial RemarksEdgar Rice Burroughs tried to buy this painting from the artist through the editor of New Story Magazine. Wyeth held firm to a price of $100, too much according to Burroughs in a letter to editor A. L. Sessions dated June 6, 1914. "I want to thank you for the trouble you have taken relative to the cover design by Mr. Wyeth. I am afraid, however, that Mr. Wyeth wants it worse than I do, so I shall be generous and let him keep it" (as quoted in "Important Pulp Paintings in the Burroughs Collection" by Danton Burroughs, in Robert Lesser, et al., Pulp Art (Edison, NJ: Castle Books, 2003), p. 79). Years later, the author's son was able to purchase the other painting Wyeth did for the Tarzan series (see NCW 1403).
