Curatorial RemarksThe illustrations for this story were the first Wyeth did for Harper's Monthly Magazine. His success with them was the reason why the editors at Harper's sent him another story to illustrate. "You can't imagine what satisfaction that gives me; to think that I succeeded in making three illustrations for them whose subjects were entirely foreign to me...(as they were full of the subtle feeling and emotion that seems so apart from me" (NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "How about the new stationery?" and dated in another hand May 5, 1905, Wyeth Family Archives).
