Curatorial RemarksN. C. Wyeth built the barn on his Rocky Hill property during the winter of 1911 /1912; this is an early view because it shows only a small shed off the south side (NCW 859 was done about the same time; NCW 1329 depicts additional structures on that side of the building). The painting came from Wyeth's studio unstretched and damaged from creasing where the canvas had been rolled. A preconservation photograph shows what may have been annotations in the lower right that resemble notations found on Pike County Ballad illustrations (as on NCW 120 and NCW 2380), however, the extreme impasto of the present work hinders any visual examination for pentimenti that might suggest an under painting. Jamie Wyeth titled the work in 2006.
