Curatorial RemarksOriginally this image consisted of approximately the left two thirds of the present work. The canvas was removed from a stretcher and applied to a larger hardboard support. The artist painted directly on the hardboard to enlarge the design on the right by approximately one third, then laid a border in gold paint or leaf around the edge. Faint horizontal and vertical lines across the image indicate that it was ruled for transfer, suggesting the artist considered enlarging the design. See NCW 938 for additional information.
