Curatorial RemarksHenriette Wyeth was visiting her grandmother in Needham when the artist wrote to his mother, "Tell Henriette I'm now making Lancelot carrying Queen Guenever off on horseback (her escape from burning at the stake)" (Betsy James Wyeth, ed.) The Brandywine River Museum holds the copy of the Boy's King Arthur that Wyeth read in preparation for this commission (NCWS.95.171, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1908. Illustrations by Alfred Kappes) and marked with notes as he selected the incidents to picture.
This painting probably hung in Bertram G. Work's Oyster Bay, NY, home "Oak Knoll" along with When Sir Percival came nigh the brim, and saw the water so boisterous, he doubted to overpass it (NCW 483). The later painting, and another one from The Boy's King Arthur, most likely this one, disappeared from "Oak Knoll" in 1966.
