Curatorial RemarksThis drawing is documented in a handwritten list, one of a group of drawings consigned by the Wyeth family to Frank E. Fowler for sale in 1976. The drawing is described in the list as "study of bearded man against tree," the subject remains unidentified. Since no painted version of the composition has come to light, it may be an unused design. The figure bears a resemblance to Walt Whitman and the composition may have been considered for The Anthology of Children's Literature.
The Brandywine River Museum holds a lantern slide made from the drawing (NCWS.95.1825.398) ; the circa date encompasses the period in which Wyeth worked with lantern slides.
