Curatorial RemarksScribner's records note that this painting (an oil on canvas in colors) was sold to the New York Public Library on Jan. 18, 1916 (Brandywine River Museum, Scribner's archives, # B5207). A 1973 inventory of works of art owned by the library, however, does not include this painting and a 1995 search of records yielded the same result (Donald Allyn to Christine Podmaniczky, Oct. 2, 1995).
Notes and insertions found in Wyeth's copy of "Bonnie Scotland Painted by Sutton Palmer" by A. R. Hope Moncrieff (A. & C. Black, 1912), suggest that the artist used this book (NCWS.95.608) as a visual resource for the Kidnapped paintings.
