Curatorial RemarksThis painting originally was commissioned for and installed in the main saloon of the yacht "Placida". The dating and title authority rests with the invoice the artist sent the owner on October 8, 1930, describing the painting "Pirates Toast To a Burning Ship" which had been executed and installed the previous month (Brandywine River Museum catalogue raisonne files). The painting was removed when the owner donated the yacht to the Navy at the beginning of World War II.
The "Placida" was built by the Bath Iron Works for Henry G. Haskell, Sr., and delivered on July 1, 1930. It was sold to the U. S. Navy on June 19, 1941. see http://swhplibrary.net/digitalarchive/items/show/10267
