Curatorial Remarks"Yesterday morning I delivered a Post Cover which was much liked--Carol posed for it (girl on horse) and for once I got quite a portrait of her" (Wyeth Family Archives, NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, dated in another hand Aug. 28, 1908). The artist's certainty about the picture's use and its reception at the "Post" are at odds with the fact that no place of publication has been found. The painting was undoubtedly cut down--magazine covers were almost all vertical in format. Earlier photographs show a diagonal stroke that came in from the top right corner of the image running through the figure's upraised gloved hand; that might have been the tail of a letter in a heading originally above the figure.
