Curatorial RemarksThis is the third of the illustrations that Wyeth did for "Whispering Smith" in July of 1906. He was pleased with it, writing he thought it "turned out to be the best thing of its sort I ever did" (NCW to Carolyn Bockius Wyeth, "I presume this will be the last..." and dated in another hand July 15, 1906, Wyeth Family Archives). This and the final painting for the book (NCW 992) were completed in four days (NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, "My work, after a very hard fight,..." and dated in another hand July 15, 1906, Wyeth Family Archives).
