Curatorial RemarksThe artist's house and studio in Chadds Ford were completed about November 1911. By December 8, Wyeth decided to take advantage of the left-over lumber and off-season rates to have the barn constructed. "Not a very large barn," he wrote, "but including a henhouse (under the same roof) and three stalls and carriage room for three carriages....It will fall in beautifully with the general layout of the whole place" (NCW to HZW, Dec. 8, 1911, Wyeth Family Archives). This view, looking north from the artist's studio toward the south facade of the barn, was painted before the addition of an ell. The unsigned work was authenticated by Carolyn Wyeth and sold in 1982 with the title "Homestead."
