Curatorial RemarksThis painting was cut down and altered sometime after its initial publication. It is now missing approximately 3/8 of the original total height, including a signature and date (N. C. WYETH / 06) in the lower right corner. Pictured above the sailor's back in the reproduction, the upswept portion of the keel wreckage (studded with other large nails) has been removed. A photograph accompanying 1965 correspondence regarding the painting shows these alterations were made prior to that date (Brandywine River Museum files).
