Curatorial RemarksThis Chadds Ford landscape was received at Knoedler's in 1956 under the title "It Was a Rough Day" (Brandywine River Museum, catalogue raisonne files, Knoedler's receipt of Sept. 18, 1956). The odd title for a landscape might have come from an inscription or label on the reverse of the canvas; that documentation was extant in the early 1970s when Carolyn Wyeth did her inventory of work in her father's studio (Brandywine River Museum library, Carolyn Wyeth inventory No. 54828). The phrase suggests that an illustration with "it was a rough day" in the title (NCW 2009) is the under-painting.
The work undoubtedly relates to NCW 1350, a view of the same motif painted in a similar style but with more detail. Since the present work is known by a black and white photograph only, it is difficult to make further comparisons between the two. Andrew Wyeth has identified the structure as a barn that stood on the Andress property off Bullock Road in Chadds Ford.
