Curatorial RemarksThis commission was offered to the artist in early November of 1906, and by Jan. 8, 1907, Wyeth had completed the cover and one illustration (see NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, Nov. 2, 1906, and Arthur Browne of A. C. McClurg & Co. to NCW, Jan. 8, 1907, Wyeth Family Archives). Browne wrote "You have interpreted Jesse Black in exactly the right direction, giving him strength and character with all his badness and defiance of man-made laws."
