Curatorial RemarksThe authority for the early provenance of this work rests with "A List of Paintings owned by Carolyn Wyeth," on paper with a letterhead of the dealer Frank E. Fowler and dated September 6, 1984 (Carolyn Wyeth notes on the collection of her father's paintings, BRM library). The painting is probably number 4, "landscape -- hill in yellow ochre, trees, snow melting -- 16 x 20 inches." The painting may also be catalogued in Carolyn Wyeth's inventory of work by N. C. Wyeth on a card that reads: No. 26 / "Snow in Woods" / Chadds Ford / 16 x 20 oil (BRM library). When auctioned in 2003, the painting was accompanied by a handwritten note from Carolyn Wyeth: "Early Snow" / by N. C. Wyeth / oil -- painted / 1922 / this is written by / his daughter / 1989 Carolyn Wyeth. Carolyn Wyeth's date is probably not correct; the Wyeths lived in Needham in 1922, not Chadds Ford.
The Brandywine River Museum holds a painting by Leal Mack which is very similar in subject, palette, and technique, so similar the two artists may have painted the views at the same time ("Stackpole" by Leal Mack, BRM 78.24.2). Mack lived in the Chadds Ford area and studied with Wyeth from fall 1915 through at least July 1919, providing the circa date for this painting.
