Curatorial RemarksThis painting is probably the result of work Wyeth did in during the winter of 1911 / 1912 (NCW to Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth, March 13, 1912, Wyeth Family Archives). Karol A. Schmeigel identified the view as Hoffman's Mill race in Chadds Ford.
N. C.Wyeth noted the building of the dam and raceway in a letter of June 30, 1908 (see BJW, ed., "The Wyeths, The Letters of N. C. Wyeth." Boston: Gambit, 1971, p. 257). The race way still exists, underneath the Route 1 bridge just south of Chadds Ford village.
