Curatorial RemarksIn a letter dated November 16, 1902, the artist wrote to his mother, "Received a short letter from Greetly [sic] and she asked for that picture of the Puritan I made at Papes. I told her once she could have it and she did not reply at the time whether she wanted it or not but she wrote and said that she wants it and has a frame and a place ready for it. I wrote and told her she could have it if no objections came from home. I guess you won't care and as they have nothing of mine that will be a good thing to give them" (WFA).
David Michaelis identified Margarette Holzer as a cousin of Henriette Zirngiebel Wyeth.
