Curatorial RemarksPhiladelphia-born artist William T. Richards began painting seascapes in 1867 after returning from his second trip to Europe. "Early Morning Surf", painted during one of the artist's visits to New Jersey, captures the flat shoreline and gentle waves typical of this coastal area. The artist's eye for rendering detail and atmospheric conditions is evident in this work.
Richards later painted the rocky cliffs of the New England coast and the British Isles. In 1890, he settled permanently in Newport, Rhode Island.
