Curatorial RemarksThis is one of two known compositions drawn in preparation for a formal portrait of Clayton Douglass Buck (1890-1965), Governor of Delaware from 1929-1937. The other drawing (NCW1501), owned by the Hunter Museum of American Art, is closer to the design as drawn on a canvas held by the Brandywine River Museum. The artist never applied paint to the canvas (NCW 2366), and there is no suggestion as to why the portrait remained unfinished. The Brandywine River Museum also holds two formal photographs of Buck found in the artist's studio (NCWS.95.1047.1 and .2) and probably used as reference.
