Curatorial RemarksThe drawing is closer to the tempera version (NCW 365) than the oil version (NCW 1473), as evidenced by the horizontality of the design.
The Brandywine River Museum holds two archival photos, stamped on reverse: PHOTOGRAPH BY / EDW. J. S. SEAL / CHADDS FORD, PA. / OCT - 7 1944. One is annotated on reverse in NCW's hand: Final composition sketch for "Summer Night" / N. C. Wyeth. These photographs were probably taken in conjunction with the Ernest W. Watson interview that appeared in the Jan. 1945 issue of American Artist (vol. 9, no. 1).
The museum also holds a lantern slide of the drawing (NCWS.95.1825.247), used in the transfer of image from paper to panel, and a lantern slide (NCWS.95.1825.248) of a related drawing that is missing.
