Curatorial RemarksLuigi Lucioni was born in Italy and came to the United States when he was ten years old. He studied at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design in New York City, and he worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines. He frequently painted outdoors, but when the weather prevented that, he worked from still life objects in his studio.
"Italian Still Life" demonstrates the artist's ability to convey textures, from the smooth, shiny pitcher to the crisp linen cloth. In contrast to the three items centered within the grid on the cloth, some objects are cut off, emphasizing Lucioni's interest in abstract compositions.
