Curatorial RemarksThree months after she sat for this portrait, the artist's mother was diagnosed with inoperable carcinoma of the bladder (Michaelis, N. C. Wyeth, A Biography, Knopf, 1999, p. 289).
When this painting was removed from the N. C. Wyeth studio in October, 1990, it was framed in a narrow, reeded frame with traces of gilding and black paint (NCWS.95.6738). Photographs in the Wyeth Family Archives show that this was the frame on the painting in 1945 and in 1965, and that it matched the frame on 96.1.24, a portrait of Andrew Newell Wyeth.
