Howard Pyle organized the illustrations for the serial publication of Paul Leicester Ford’s novel Janice Meredith: A Story of the Revolution published in 1899. Not surprisingly, several of his students were among the illustrators selected. Anna Whelan Betts studied with Pyle in Philadelphia and was invited to join his summer school in Chadds Ford in 1899. While Betts’s work often focused on women’s lives, here she joins in the Pyle tradition of illustrating scenes from the Revolutionary War—this time for a story centering on the daughter of a colonial Tory who assists George Washington and Paul Revere.
