Identification of the figure comes from Andrew Wyeth, and researchers at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia feel that similarities with known portraits of Stuyvesant make the attribution likely.

The image is similar in size, medium and composition to N. C. Wyeth's portrait of Johan Printz, used as the frontispiece illustration to Christopher Ward's The Dutch and Swedes on the Delaware 1609-64 (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1930). The present work may have been executed as an additional illustration for the publication. Alternatively, it may have been completed earlier, about 1926, as a preliminary study for Wyeth's life-size depiction of Peter Stuyvesant (NCW 2467), part of a commission for the Hotel Roosevelt.
