Curatorial RemarksThis composition is typical of many drawings N. C. Wyeth did as a student of Howard Pyle. He wrote to his mother August 2, 1904, "This afternoon I made a composition of an Indian funeral which in my mind turned out very bad but was agreeably surprised to find that HP liked it much and wishes me to paint it the first chance I get. He says he is sure it will sell." In the letter Wyeth drew a rough sketch of the drawing (Wyeth Family Archives). The artist returned to this composition in 1906 for an oil painting entitled The Burial (NCW 318).
