Andrew Wyeth’s sister Carolyn Wyeth (1909-1994) was an artist and teacher, known to her family for her fierce independence and rebellious spirit, and for her incisive critiques of the artwork of her brother and students. In this profile portrait, Wyeth depicts Carolyn staring into the distance, looking sphinxlike in demeanor. Through light and shadow, the artist captures all the nuances of her facial structure, as well as the wiry texture and wildness of her hair.
