Curatorial RemarksThis work occurs in the inventory (Brandywine River Museum of Art, Annenberg Research Center) Carolyn Wyeth made of the paintings in her father's studio, No. 27, as "Jug and Orange." The jug (NCWS.95.1504) is still in the N. C. Wyeth studio collection (BRMA).
A master technician and exacting teacher, N. C. Wyeth believed that the first responsibility of a young artist is to "love an object for its own sake . . . simply because it is an object of form and substance revealed by the wonder of light. . . ." The date range assigned to this painting reflects the period that began with an article Wyeth wrote extolling the importance of still life in art training (N. C. Wyeth, "The Illustrator and His Development," American Art Student, vol. 1, nos. 3-4, Nov.-Dec. 1916), and ended with the period when he taught daughters Henriette and Carolyn in his studio.
