Curatorial RemarksJon Redmond is a contemporary American painter whose still life and architectural works showcase the confidence of an artist intimately familiar with his subject matter while retaining a pure enchantment with light and form. Originally from Brandywine Valley, Redmond graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1991 and later earned an MFA at the University of Delaware in 2003. His latest body of work, including Corner of a Barn, reflects a period of reacquaintance with the local landscape. He specifically sought out area farms as his subjects, many of which are still active agricultural sits. These paintings are influenced by his exploration of his past haunts and his search for places that show the gritty patina of daily use, places that convey a feeling of home.
Redmond’s return to the local landscape has required him to reconcile with the extensive legacy of the Wyeth family of artists. He has come to understand his work, in contrast to that of Andrew Wyeth, deals less with the specificity of its subject matter and more with conveying an impressionistic interpretation. Though his work appears to be firmly within the plein air tradition, his technique is multifaceted. He begins by working in front of the motif, as plein air painters do, but continues to work on the canvas indirectly once back in the studio, layering and manipulating the paint, giving the surface a complexly worked appearance. He also belongs to a family of artists; his father taught photography at West Chester University while growing up.
