Curatorial RemarksPainting was created by Gibbs while living in Paris in the summer of 2022 in preparation for a solo show at Marianne Ibrahim Gallery. The artist recalls the intense feelings he had being surrounded by the city’s historic architecture and being exposed to the superb art in its museums. In this fantastical nocturnal scene, an allegory of both transgression and freedom, a figure dives from the iconic Pont Neuf into the Seine. Gibbs revels in the physicality of paint- his gestural approach and loose, fluid brushstrokes create an aura of energy in the brilliant flashes of light reflecting on the gentle waves in the river.
