One of the leading illustrators to come from the Brandywine School, Frank E. Schoonover devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting in the late 1930s, after the decline in the popularity of illustrated books and magazines. This wildly expressive and Impressionistic painting depicts a spot in Pike County, Pennsylvania, where Schoonover had a summer home and studio. According to his diary, the morning after he bought his property, he visited the farm of Will Eshbach, depicted here, seeking his gardening advice.
Curatorial RemarksAccording to the Schoonover Catalogue Raisonne, “ Will Eshbach was a farmer who lived near the Schoonover’s summer home in Bushkill, Pennsylvania. According to his diary, the morning after Schoonover bought his place, he headed for the Eshbach’s farm for gardening advice. Will’s son, Russ, (later a prominent Pennsylvania politician) became one of Schoonover’s favorite models.
