Nancy Ekholm Burkert’s illustrations are marked by her exhaustive linear detail and extensive research. Burkert was the original illustrator of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach (1961) and is perhaps best known for her Caldecott Honors winning illustrations in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1972). In this study, which greatly resembles her images for Snow White, Burkert combines charcoal and pencil in a beautifully composed portrait of a girl. The graceful lines of the drawing reflect Burkert’s deep knowledge of Flemish Renaissance painting.
