Curatorial RemarksMany of Homer's wood engraving designs of Gloucester, Massachusetts, were based upon watercolors he produced there during the summer of 1873, when he first seriously pursued the medium. Homer enhanced the bright highlights in this image by leaving the white of the paper in reserve, a technique he also used in his Gloucester watercolors of the time.
