Two years prior to this portrait, John McCoy began private art studies with N. C. Wyeth, working in his teacher’s studio alongside Andrew Wyeth. In both McCoy’s and Andrew Wyeth’s depictions of the same young woman, there is a shared interest in capturing the effects of light and dark, as well as conveying a sense of the sitter’s personality and mood. Andrew Wyeth would later remark of McCoy: “I think I may well have been influenced by his rather somber look at things. There is a brooding quality, a smoldering power in his painting.”
Curatorial RemarksPainted at the same time as 2010.9.1, in the N. C. Wyeth studio and under N. C. Wyeth's tutelage.
